Walk through George Washington's Forest

Just in time for the 4th of July weekend: a new walkabout through lands once owned by George Washington, right here in Arlington.  If you are looking for a shady stroll through the western corner of the County - hosted by the General himself (more or less) - don your three-pointed hat and print out the map and directions at http://www.walkarlington.com/go/gwforest.html. Then, starting on July 1, watch the video version of this walkabout several times a day on Arlington Cable Channel AVN 71.

BNA to Relocate Headquarters to Crystal City

A vibrant pedestrian environment was one of the reasons publisher BNA chose to relocate from its Washington, D.C. location to Crystal City (in Arlington), according to BNA Chief executive Paul N. Wojcik.  Although Wojcik initially had concerns about Crystal City's image as a forbidding canyon of office buildings,  "…going there and seeing how it's changed in the last five years -- seeing the new restaurants and people walking on the streets -- I realized there was a vitality there that was good," Wojcik said. The move will bring 1300 new jobs to Arlington.  Read the full article.

Walking Shoes

Don't head out on your walkabout or through the streets of Crystal City without first attending to your feet! Shoes that fit well and support you are well worth the investment, fitness experts agree.  This second article in the "equipped walker" series can be found at http://www.walkarlington.com/go/shoes.html , and includes a list of local sources for comfortable walking shoes.

Youngest Pedestrian Advocates

Unbeknownst to each other, two young residents of the Donaldson Run community became very interested in seeing a new sidewalk get built. One went to work soliciting signatures for his petition; the other read a letter requesting a new sidewalk for her birthday. Safety Patrol Camp

Did you know that the concept of posting trained student safety patrols along routes to schools dates back to the 1920's?  Arlington has used the patrol system for many years, and once again will hold trainings at several locations this summer. The program runs for five consecutive days from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. and costs $45.

Civic Federation Challenge

The Arlington Civic Federation held its first annual challenge walk on June 4. Eight civic associations participated, with County Board member Chris Zimmerman and Civ Fed President Pat Smaldore leading the charge.  Though turnout wasn't quite as expected, everyone seemed to like the idea, so look for a new revamped version next year. And the winner, you ask? The Columbia Heights Civic Association! Are we surprised?
