W&OD Fans To Celebrate Trail's 30th Anniversary

Who is coming to the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park Trail's 30th birthday party on Saturday, July 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Trail Mile Marker 39 in Paeonian Springs in Loudoun County, Virginia?

Cyclists—walkers—equestrians and their horses—commuters—skaters—trail neighbors—trail safety volunteers—adopt-a-trail families—park enthusiasts—youngsters—teens—families--and all who want to join the celebration!

Live country music by the Brandy Stills Band, light refreshments, railroad and W&OD Trail history video and slide presentations, safety programs, free gifts, prizes, melon treats and fun on an inflatable slide and obstacle course will welcome more than 1,000 trail fans.  Bicycle, skate and outdoor equipment store representatives will display and explain new gear and technologies.

The Friends of the W&OD Trail (FOWD) and the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NVRPA) invite the public to celebrate the 30th anniversary of NVRPA's popular National Recreation Trail.  NVRPA opened the first section of this multi-use recreation corridor in Falls Church in 1974.  The final paved segment of the 45-mile trail was completed in 1988.

The Potomac Pedalers Touring Club and the Reston Bike Club plan group bicycle rides and a rally concluding at the anniversary celebration.   The Sierra Club Metropolitan Washington Regional Outings Program and the Loudoun Walking and Volksport Club plan hikes to the event.  Public and NVRPA officials will join FOWD leaders for an anniversary program from noon to 2 p.m.

Supporting businesses include Modell's Sporting Goods in Fairfax, Aldo's Italian Steakhouse in Falls Church and Coldstone Creamery in Vienna.  Potential sponsors and gift and prize donors should call NVRPA Development Manager Sandra Detwiler at 703-359-4610.

"The W&OD Railroad Regional Park Trail is a national model for multiuse trails and cooperation among local governments," states NVRPA Chairman Walter L. Mess.  The trail follows the route of the former Washington and Old Dominion Railroad from Shirlington in Arlington County, through the City of Falls Church and on west to Vienna, where the trail splits to become parallel pathways, one for equestrians and one for cyclists and pedestrians.  The dual trail continues more than 30 miles to Reston, Herndon, Ashburn, Sterling, Leesburg, Paeonian Springs, Hamilton and Purcellville.

Information about the trail is available on the Friends of the W&OD Trail website at www.wodfriends.org, www.nvrpa.org and at the trail's Smiths Switch headquarters at 703-729-0596.  The W&OD Trail is one of 19 regional parks owned and operated by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority.
