Walk, Bike and Be Counted this Thursday and Saturday
September 8, 2009
Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services is looking for a few good volunteers to help with a Bike/Pedestrian Count taking place in Arlington later this week. Here's some background:
With your help, BikeArlington and WalkArlington are gearing up for the biggest pedestrian and bicyclist counting event of the year. September is the main event for the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project. Volunteers in Arlington will conduct manual counts at a number of locations across the County on Thursday, September 10 and Saturday, September 12.
Here's how it works: Volunteers station themselves at shared-use trails, along sidewalks, and near on-road bike planes to count bicyclists and pedestrians. Count coordinators provide volunteers with links to tracking sheets and other resources [ http://drop.io/september09bikepedcount] in advance. All the volunteers have to do is show up, count, and send in the numbers afterward! Volunteer shifts are only two hours long, and a variety of time slots and locations remain to be claimed. What's more, DES will also host an optional Bike/Pedestrian Count training and social hour on Wednesday, September 9, on the lobby level of Court House Plaza, 2100 Clarendon Blvd. The gathering will include orientation, discussion, and light refreshments. Remember, 09/09/09 … from 6 – 8:00 pm. The presentation on the counting effort will begin at 6:30.These counts are the gold standard of data collection – the numbers help County transportation planners quantify non-motorized transportation, and the observations and feedback of volunteers enhance understanding and analysis of the numbers, while supporting requests for continuing investment in cycling and walking.
